How to Claim Travel from SARS
Short answer: Employees can claim business travel against a travel allowance on their IRP5, and sole proprietors claim business travel as a cost of the business. Either way SARS wants a logbook showing business kilometres, so keeping it as you go is the job.

Frequently asked questions
I get a salary and no travel allowance. Can I claim travel?
Generally no. An employee claims travel against a travel allowance, with limited exceptions such as some commission earners. Check with SARS or a tax practitioner.
What does each logbook trip need?
The date, distance, destination and business purpose, plus opening and closing odometer readings for the year. See what to record in a SARS logbook.
Do you submit the claim?
No. We build the logbook and organise the slips. You or your tax practitioner put the claim on your return.
